Who does diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) benefit? Chief Diversity Officer Crystal Hardie Langston clears up a DEI misconception and encourages everyone to be an ally and enable progress.
Debunking a DEI myth
Producer: So, how’s it going?
Crystal Hardie Langston: Good to see everybody.
I have been at Vanguard for 16 years. Which is crazy to say. I’ve never been anywhere for 16 years. (laughs).
Question (on screen): What’s one myth about DEI that you’d like to debunk?
Crystal Hardie Langston: One of the common myths or misconceptions of DEI is that it is relevant only to those that are underrepresented, when the truth is that DEI is for everyone. Every single person and individual brings a diversity dimension to their community, to their workplace, to society, but not everyone experiences exclusion or discrimination. The work of DEI seeks to address that on behalf of the underrepresented, and it’s critical to have all contribute as allies and to amplify the voices of those that are underrepresented.
